Blepharoplasty is a functional surgical procedure. It is intended to reshape the upper eyelid or lower eyelid and is performed by removing or repositioning excess tissue as well as reinforcing surrounding muscles and tendons. When an excessive amount of upper eyelid skin is present, the skin may hang over the eyelashes and cause a loss of peripheral vision. The outer and upper parts of the visual field are most commonly affected and the condition may cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. In this circumstance, upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed to improve peripheral vision.

How Blepharoplasty Works
Blepharoplasty is performed through external incisions made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids, such as the creases of the upper lids. Through the incisions, excess skin and fat is removed. This can help relieve some of the heaviness weighing down the upper lids. The remaining skin is tightened to create smoother and firmer lids.
Local anesthesia is used for your complete comfort. Depending upon the scope of the procedure, the operation takes about one to two hours.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Your eyelids will be swollen and bruised for one to two weeks after the procedure, and it is important that you do not lift more than 30 lbs. for two weeks
You will be given detailed instructions that explain how to care for your healing eyelids, medications to take or apply to the eyelids and when to return for follow-up visits.

It can take several months for the final results to stabilize.
The anatomy of your eyelids as well as your skin quality, age and the adjacent bony and soft tissue all affect the cosmetic and functional outcomes after blepharoplasty.
Am I a Blepharoplasty Candidate?

To qualify for surgery, you should be in good overall health, not smoke (or be able to quit several weeks prior to surgery) and have realistic expectations of the surgery.

What is the difference between functional and cosmetic blepharoplasty?
Cosmetic blepharoplasty is performed for aesthetic reasons (e.g., your eyelids look aged or tired). Functional blepharoplasty is performed for functional or medical reasons (e.g., loose eyelid skin droops low enough to impair your vision). Are there any factors that can cause complications after blepharoplasty?
Factors which are known to cause complications after surgery include failure to recognize pre-existing dry eyes, which may become exacerbated by disrupting the natural tear film. An improperly performed procedure or failure to adhere to post-operative instructions can also cause complications.
How should I prepare for eyelid surgery?
To prepare for eyelid surgery, you should stop taking medications or adjust your current medications according to your surgeon’s instructions. Your surgeon may also ask you to undergo a medical evaluation or get lab testing.
Is there anesthesia?
Yes, local anesthesia is used during eyelid surgery to prevent you from experiencing any pain.
Can I get blepharoplasty after LASIK/ PRK?
Yes, although it is important to allow your eyes to completely recover from laser eye surgery before pursuing blepharoplasty.
Are there any visible scars after surgery?
The scarring should be very discreet, as the incisions are carefully placed in the natural creases of the eyelids.
Are eyelid surgery results permanent?
Your eyes will continue to age normally and the skin will gradually start to loosen and sag again. However, your eyes should look better than they would have if you did not have eyelid surgery.
